Caracas, May 7 (EFE) .- The Chancellor of Venezuela, Yván Gil, described Wednesday as historical the signing of the Agreement of Strategic association and Cooperation with Russia, at the end of the negotiations in the Kremlin among the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, and his counterpart from the Caribbean country, Nicolás Maduro, on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of his diplomatic relations.
“Today is historical (…) It is the first time that a Latin American country signs a treaty of this caliber, a treaty with these dimensions that covers all the spheres of cooperation,” said the official, who is next to Maduro in Russia, in statements to the Venezuelan state television (VTV) state channel (VTV).
Gil explained that this new agreement covers different areas such as the policy, economic, energy, financial, scientific, technological, health, agricultural, as well as in security and defense.
He also noted that there were two meetings during the day, in which, he said, each of the signed agreements and “each of the challenges” that both countries have in these matters were reviewed “.
“Imports from Venezuela to Russia have been increased from agricultural goods, areas such as fruits, vegetables, fishing products,” he added.
The Venezuelan Chancellor insisted that this encounter between Maduro and Putin was fruitful and that opens a “new stage in” diplomatic relations.
“The strategic cooperation treaty has a chapter for economic development and has, within that chapter precisely, the creation of a new financial architecture, of monetary exchange,” he said.
He added that in Venezuela the Russian payment system has already developed, which allows, he said, the exchange in tourism.
“Already all the hundreds of thousands of Russian tourists who have gone to Venezuela have been able to verify their efficient and effective use,” he added.
This Wednesday, Putin and Maduro signed a strategic association and cooperation agreement, which consolidates, as explained by the Russian presidency, the “high level reached by Russian-Venezuelan relations and establishes the basic principles and guidelines for the future development of long-term cooperation.”
At the beginning of the meeting with Maduro, Putin stressed that the commercial volume (200 million dollars) between the two countries increased 64 % in 2024 and stressed the “good perspectives” in many areas such as energy, transport, logistics, health and pharmaceutical.
Maduro also expressed his confidence that the Agreement of Strategic Association and Cooperation with Moscow will allow relations to “flourish” between Russia, “today the main power of humanity”, and Venezuela, “fighting in the ideal of Simón Bolívar and Hugo Chávez.”
