A subject identified as Jesús Velásquez resulted in first and second grade burns in 60% of his body after receiving a powerful electric shock when he tried to steal the “The Bordones” substation of Cmana, Sucre state.
According to information provided by the authorities, the suspect entered the electricity enclosure with the clear intention of subtracting strategic material, presumably copper or other elements of value. However, his plan was frustrated in the most painful way, when in the midst of his robbery attempt, he accidentally made contact with a high voltage cable of 220 volts.
The discharge was fulminant, leaving Velásquez seriously injured and trapped in one of the transformer banks of the substation. The situation required the urgent intervention of the Fire Department of Cumaná, who moved to the place to perform the rescue work.
The complexity of the operation forced the interruption of the electric service in several areas of the city for an approximate period of 40 minutes, generating inconvenience to the inhabitants, while the firefighters worked to lower the injured of the structure.
So far, the authorities have not informed if the subject will face legal positions for his attempted theft.
