Every year, between 4 thousand and 6 thousand children and adolescents are diagnosed with cancer in Mexico.
This disease and its multiple variables have become the first cause of death in children under 4 to 15 years, in Veracruz.
“Throughout the Republic, and classically here in Veracruz, it was the second cause of death after accidents, the first due to illness. But the one that since 2020 is the first cause of death does speak to us,” says Diana Magnolia Reyes Morales, a pediatric medical.
Leukemia stands out among the different types of cancer most frequent in Veracruz children.

According to Health authorities, at least 500 new cases have been diagnosed since 2020.
Although they only represent between 3 and 5 percent of the total cases detected, their mortality rate is around 45 percent.

“They treated me super good and then I thank you very much for their treatment. Thanks to them I can continue alive,” shares Karla Fernanda Domínguez de la Mora, a patient who beat cancer in Veracruz.
Xalapa, Veracruz and Coatzacoalcos are municipalities that have specialized health units in serving children with suspected cancer.

Although they are also the cities with the highest incidence, so specialists call general doctors, pediatricians and parents to be attentive to any alert signal.
“To all moms who have some kind of this disease, the cancer, I would tell them that they never abandon the treatment, that they fight until the end and above all that they seek support,” says Mrs. María del Carmen López, mother of a patient with cancer.
