Los Angeles, May 2 (EFE) .- Civil Rights groups reported this Friday that they have filed a guilty homicide lawsuit in the case of the 8-year-old girl who died in custody of the Customs Office and Border Protection (CBP), despite the fact that her mother repeatedly asked for emergency medical attention for the child.
Haitian Bridge Alliance and The Texas Civil Rights Project presented the legal complaint on behalf of Anadith Tanay Reyes Álvarez’s family, who died on May 17, 2023 when he was in custody of the border patrol along with his parents and his 2 older brothers at the Harlingen (Texas) facilities.
A CBP investigation determined that between the afternoon of May 14, when the family, of Honduran origin, arrived in Harlingen, and on the morning of May 17, the mother sought attention for the girl at least 9 times by symptoms similar to those of influenza.
The day she died, the girl (born in Panama) was treated by a practicing nurse four times after complaining about stomach pain, nausea and difficulty breathing. The nurse had refused to send the girl to a hospital and for when she did it was too late.
“We demand responsibility and transparency to the CBP, an agency that has failed too many people,” organizations said in a statement, in which they stressed that the death of the little girl could be avoided.
A designated monitor report, which supervises the implementation of a legal agreement on the care of migrant children in the US, gave the reason to civil groups after an investigation, which found that the death of the child could be prevented and was the result of “a series of failures.”
Demand occurs just when immigrants have criticized the expulsion of American citizen children with their mothers, because at least two of the children were receiving cancer treatment. EFE
