Caracas, May 3 (EFE) .- The government of Venezuela expressed on Saturday its condolences to Turkey for the death of the deputy, filmmaker and actor Sirri Süreyya Önder, 62, a highlight member of the political delegation that tries to mediate for a peace process between the Turkish government and the Kurdish guerrillas.
“In this moment of mourning, the Venezuelan government and the people extend their most felt condolences to the brother people of Turkey, the great National Assembly and the relatives and relatives of the distinguished parliamentarian, whose political career and commitment to their nation leave an indelible mark,” said Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil, in a message posted on Telegram.
Likewise, Gil reaffirmed the “friendship and solidarity ties” between Venezuela and Türkiye.
This Saturday, the Turkish deputy Sirri Süreyya Önder died in Istanbul, after 18 days in a coma after a heart attack.
Önder was admitted last April 15 due to cardiac arrest and emergency operated due to aortic dissection; But, despite initially stabilized, he died 18 days later for a multiorgan dysfunction, the Florence Nightingale hospital in Istanbul reported in a statement.
The artist and politician, born in 1962 in the city of Adiyaman in southeastern Turkey, since 2011 deputy of the Turkish Parliament in the ranks of the BDP leftist party, which was subsequently renamed as HDP and finally as DEM, third formation of Parliament.
Since last autumn, Önder was one of the three members of the De Delegation of the DEM who tried to mediate among the Kurdish guerrillas of Turkey, the proscribed Workers Party of Kurdistan (PKK) and the Turkish government, for which he made several visits to the founder of the PKK, Abdullah Öcalan, imprisoned since 1999 in Türkiye.
The deceased parliamentarian had already assumed this same mediator function between the PKK and the government in a peace process initiated in 2013 that ended up aborting in 2015.
Despite his unequivocal leftist and Prokurda position, Önder was one of Turkey’s most respected politicians not only among his co -religionists but also among his adversaries of the Turkish nationalist right.
