Soledad Varas: “Bustamante had no responsibility in the death of the child”

Soledad Varas, lawyer of the accused Bustamante, spoke with the 4 × 4 radio after the sentence to life imprisonment for the two accused. He said the defense worked incessantly for years. The lawyer denied that there was a relationship between her defendant and the mother of the child, and said it was a link of mutual convenience. He mentioned a psychological expertise that describes the loop as “parasitic relationship”, in which both parties obtained benefits. According to Varas, Bustamante sought coat, food and transport to the child and her mother, and did not present a profile compatible with the commission of a violent crime.

Regarding the accusations of cover -up, Varas questioned its validity arguing that the body was found in the same place where the event would have occurred, without indications of concealment or actions to divert the investigation. “How can you talk about cover -up if the body was there, in sight?” Finally, he criticized the influence of public opinion on judicial decisions and requested that the ruling be based exclusively on verifiable legal elements.
