Buenos Aires (EFE) .- Almost ninety years after its inauguration, the obelisk of Buenos Aires- undisputed symbol of the city- incorporates for the first time one of the imagined projects in its conception: an accessible cusp thanks to an internal elevator that allows you to enjoy a new panoramic view of the Argentine capital.
It is a modern elevator, with glazed walls to the sides and another in its rear equipped with a LED screen, which allows 67.5 meters to be raised in a minute.
The last section are 35 steps, before arriving at the Mirador de Cuatro Ventanas in the monument dome.
The Obelisk, a symbol of a Buenos Aires of which offers a panoramic
The Obelisk was designed in 1936 by Argentine architect Alberto Prebisch to commemorate the 400 years of the first foundation of Buenos Aires.
From its origin the project was thinking with an elevator, but this had never been completed.
The work was promoted by the Government of the City of Buenos Aires and was presented by the mayor, Jorge Macri, who stressed that “this great engineering project revalued one of the Buenos Aires symbols.”
“The panoramic viewpoint is a new tourist attraction that will change the way we see our city and its heritage, as in the great metropolis of the world,” he added during the opening ceremony.
The elevator was introduced by parts inside the monument, where they finally assembled them.
«Electrical installations were conditioned and the floor was adapted to fix the snail and metal structure. The elevator was armed inside, piece by piece, since the original door is the only point of income, ”explained the Minister of Public Space and Urban Hygiene of Buenos Aires, Ignacio Baistrocchi.
Private operator
Although it is not yet open to the general public, during the last weekend the first visits of residents of the San Nicolás neighborhood began, elected among about 22,000 registered by a call on social networks.
At the moment, the routes have limited quota and will continue during this month to celebrate the anniversary for the 89 years of the Obelisk, whose construction ended on May 23, 1936.
The viewpoint will be under the operation of a private company through a tender, in coordination with the Buenos Aires Tourism Entity, and the proposal will include a museum experience.
In recent days, the lightning rods of the monument was replaced for the first time and currently works to remodel external paint.
Almost nine decades of its inauguration, the Obelisk is no longer only the postcard of Buenos Aires: now also offers a new way of admiring the city from the heights.
