The mountain benefited the Colombian Daniel Martínez on day 16 of the Giro d’Italia. He was third and returned to second place overall.

The snow affected the original route of the opening day of the third week of the race. The cyclists demanded that the organization avoid passing through the Umbrailpass, given the low temperatures and slippery road conditions.

The complaints were reluctantly heeded and the 206 kilometer route starting in Livigno was reduced to 118 from Spondigna with the first-class ascent of Monte Pana before the arrival in Santa Cristina Val Gardena.

The temperature touched 2 degrees Celsius. Julian Alaphilippe took over the break alone 1:54 behind the leaders, towed by the work of Movistar with Nairo Quintana with sustained pedaling and Einer Rubio.

In the middle of that ramp, the difference went to 30 seconds with the two Colombians in good rhythm alongside the leader Tadej Pogacar in the rain. Daniel Martínez went up without a team in another hand-to-hand duel with Geraint Thomas. He crossed third, 16 seconds behind the Slovenian, winner due to his power.

In the final corners, Martínez pulled away from the Briton, closed the gap and regained second place overall, confirmed by his bonus in the stage.

Daniel was 7:18 behind Pogacar, followed by Thomas 7:40. Einer Rubio maintained his place in the top 10. He is ninth at 13:09

Stage 17 will maintain the mountain route with 159 kilometers from Selva di Val Gardena to Passo del Brocon. Short route of two first-class passes, one at the finish line and another couple of second-class ones along the route.
