OAKLAND, Calif. — Jake Meyers hit a three-run homer to cap Houston’s six-run fourth inning, and the Astros beat the Oakland Athletics 6-3 on Friday night.

Justin Verlander (3-2) struck out nine in six innings to pass Hall of Famer Greg Maddux (3,371) for tenth place on the all-time strikeout list.

The Astros ace now has 3,377 strikeouts. He allowed a pair of runs – one earned – as well as eight hits, and did not issue a single walk for the second consecutive start, for the third in his last four starts and for the seventh of the year.

Cuban Yordan Álvarez contributed an RBI double, while Josh Hader ended the 2 hour and 32 minute game with his seventh save for Houston, which began a seven-visit tour.

Ross Stripling (1-9) retired the first nine Astros in order. But Venezuelan José Altuve hit the right-hander with a single at the beginning of the fourth inning, for the first of four hits in a row, including a two-run single by Alex Bregman.

For the Astros, Venezuelan Altuve was 3-for-5 with one run scored. Cuban Yordan Álvarez 2-for-4 with one run scored and one RBI. The Dominicans Jeremy Peña 4-0 with one scored, Yainer Díaz 4-1.

For the Athletics, Venezuelan Abraham Toro 0-5. Dominican Miguel Andújar was 3 for 4 with two RBIs.
