F1: Conclusions after the Canadian Grand Prix

Canada left one of the most entertaining races so far this campaign. Red Bull with mixed results and McLaren and Mercedes look threatening

R.B.

The subsidiary team continues with a firm step in the season. They managed to get their two drivers into Q3.

A Safety Car ruined Yuki Tsunoda’s chances of scoring points, but Daniel Ricciardo achieved a solid eighth place and the redemption of his image that had been questioned in recent races. — Sebastian Aceves

“He has said nonsense but he always does it,” Daniel Ricciardo on the criticism of Jacques Villeneuve

Alpine

For the first time this season, both Alpine drivers managed to score points in the same weekend, with Esteban Ocon earning one point for his tenth place, and Pierre Gasly bagging two, finishing one place above his teammate. This is an exceptional result taking into account what happened in the last race, with both drivers starting practically from the back of the grid and the news that Ocon is no longer with the team for next year’s season. Not everything is rosy in the organization, but the arrow points up.

Gasly managed to survive contact with Checo Pérez at the start of the race, and although he lost valuable time due to the incident, he managed to recover to get into the points zone. This type of racing paints a positive picture for Alpine.– Rafael Zamorano

“I received the instruction to let Pierre pass with two laps to go, so that he could try to catch up with Daniel, who was ahead. I let Pierre pass and lost a place on the penultimate lap. I did what was best for the team and respected the instruction that was given to me”, — Esteban Ocon.

Aston Martin

Aston Martin showed that it has more speed than the Alpine and VCARB, but they are still behind Red Bull, McLaren, Mercedes and Ferrari, something that must be too frustrating at this point in the championship. — Eric Cervantes

“A little bit of defense with Lewis, but yeah, he was definitely one of the fastest guys on the track. So it was just a matter of time before we lost that position.” — Fernando Alonso about his duel with Lewis Hamilton.

Ferrari

Lost opportunity. First mistake in qualifying by not putting new soft tires on the drivers to try to make the cut. They weren’t going to have new tires for Q3, but at least they were going to advance a little on the starting grid.

Then, in the race, the frustration was with the top speed of Leclerc’s car and a very daring race plan – changing to slicks before everyone else, but with the track very wet. After Leclerc’s retirement came Sainz’s retirement due to driver error. Ferrari has not retired both cars since Australia 2023.

McLaren and Red Bull are strong. Mercedes showed a lot of pace and we will see if it is a serious threat or just circumstantial. But it is imperative that Ferrari understand why what happened in Montreal happened, a track that, a priori, seemed like an ideal setting to score big. They went to zero. — Victor Macin

“These weekends don’t scare me. “It is what it is, that’s what racing is like.” Fred Vasseurdirect from Ferrari.

They were daring to be the only team to start with wet tires at the start of the race, which caused Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg to become the drivers who gained the most positions, but as soon as the track began to dry, their strategy collapsed and They began to lose positions. Additionally, the team hurt both drivers by being very slow in the pits.

It seemed that both managed to scratch some point in the race, but they finished eleventh and twelfth place for Nico and Kevin, respectively. Still, they provided excitement and a good show in Montreal. — Ricardo Cariño

“I didn’t feel like we made the best of it today with all the opportunities the race offered, we didn’t seem to take advantage of that, so it’s disappointing. We had one very slow pit stop and one medium slow pit stop, and I also think we stopped for the intermediates that were coming off the wet tires too early” — Kevin Magnussen.

Kick-Sauber

There’s not much to say when you’re the only team without points in the championship, and your two drivers have to start the next competition from the pits. Basically another lost weekend for Stake, with Zhou Guanyu finishing last among the drivers who finished the competition, in P15, and Valtteri Bottas second from last, in P13. Stake remains the only team with zeros so far in the championship. — Rafael Zamorano

“Although a lot happened during the race, it was a lonely competition for me, especially in the second half,” — Zhou Guanyu.

McLaren

Lando Norris was once again the protagonist in the race. The papaya team fought head-to-head with Red Bull in what became the best race of the 2024 season. Second place for the Briton, who finished 3.8 seconds behind Mx Verstappen, while Óscar Piastri finished in fourth position. The Woking team has put its car on par with the RB20 and on the return to Europe it will not be unreasonable to see them stealing another victory.– Ricardo Cariño

“It was chaos, it was eventful. To be honest, I felt like I had a good race from start to finish. I had incredible pace, the safety car overtook me, but just as it helped me in Miami, it hurt me now” — Lando Norris

Mercedes

Mercedes is back. The great weekend of the Silver Arrows is not a coincidence, the team had shown signs of improvement and this time they showed that they can compete with the McLarens and that guarantees us parity for the rest of the championship. — Eric Cervantes

“I think that mistake with Oscar, when I tried to pass him and lost position to Lewis, cost us at least second position and maybe we could have fought with Max at the end of the race.” — George Russell acknowledging his mistake on the track.

Red Bull

Without excuses or pretexts, Checo Pérez soured his recent renewal with Red Bull after a disappointing Canadian GP. The Mexican was left out in Q1 and in the race everything went from bad to worse. A collision with Gasly, the rain and finally a spin that destroyed the rear of his car, sealed his nightmare weekend. A bad streak that has characterized the pilot from Guadalajara during his time with the energy drink. — Sebastian Aceves

On the other hand, Max Verstappen had the ability to solve the problems that arose throughout the grand prix to add another victory. Unlike other races, at no point in the race did he have enough control to win with relative ease. — Sebastian Aceves

“You don’t have to hide anything, it is what it was, learn from your mistakes and you have to keep things in their place,” Czech Perez

Williams

What a frustrating Williams situation in Canada. The drivers and the car gave everything in qualifying, both passed the first cut and Albon made it to Q3. Already in the race, the car was competitive, it seems that they are advancing with the race pace of the car. However, the points opportunity was gone when Sainz’s Ferrari hit Alex’s Williams. That’s where it all ended.

Double recalls, wrecked cars, especially Sargeant’s, and that means more money in repairs. — Victor Macin

“Frustrating, because points were possible today,” Alex Albon.
