Detector: photo of the flag in favor of Petro in the Copa América is a montage

The DetectBot of La Silla Vacía (+57 3102940910) received a screenshot of a tweet from the senator of the Historical Pact, Isabel Zuleta, who shared a photo of some fans of the Colombian soccer team with a flag that says “Fuerza Petro ”.

The senator posted the image after the Colombian national team’s match against Paraguay on June 24 at the Copa América in Houston, United States. The photo was also published by the Pacto’s former presidential candidate, Alfredo Saade.

As several users asked us to verify the photo that Zuleta posted, we ran the Lie Detector on it and found that it is fake and a montage. The flag actually said “Fuera Petro” (Petro Out).

This is the senator’s tweet:

The flag actually said “Petro Out.”

A search on Twitter revealed that the senator deleted the tweet we are reviewing from her account. However, several users took a screenshot of the post and shared it, claiming that the photo was a montage (1, 2 and 3). Even the Cambio Radical party responded to the senator.

That search also turned up a video by Semana columnist Sofy Casas from June 24 — posted minutes before the start of the Colombia-Paraguay match — showing a group of Colombian fans holding the country’s flag with a message superimposed on it that reads “Fuera Petro.”

When comparing that video with the image that Senator Zuleta published, we found that both were taken in the same place: the stands and other details coincide.

This is the comparison between the two photos:

We searched Twitter for the phrase “Petro out Copa America” and found other videos and photos that from different angles captured the flag with the anti-Petro message (here, here and here). And, on the contrary, there are no other images or recordings of the flag that the senator published.

We also reviewed in detail the photo that Zuleta shared and noticed that the letter z of the word “Fuerza” is different from the others and looks edited.

That is to say, the photo that Zuleta published is a montage.

In any case, we did a Google search with the phrase that the flag actually had and we found that several media outlets recorded the incident against the president that occurred in the Colombia match against Paraguay (1, 2 and 3).

The digital media Pulzo also shared a video on its Twitter account where the flag is seen with the message “Fuera Petro”:

For the above reasons, we classify the image published by Senator Zuleta as false.
