El defense turco Merih Demiral He made a gesture linked to the “Gray Wolves”a Turkish far-right group, after having scored one of their two goals against the Austrians in the Eurocup.

Demiral was suspended “for failing to respect the general principles of conduct, for violating fundamental rules of good conduct, for having used a sporting event for a non-sporting demonstration and for having brought football into disrepute,” UEFA said.

He will therefore miss the quarter-finals of the Euro 2019 against the Netherlands on Saturday in Berlin, a match that Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will attend.

Demiral’s gesture sparked diplomatic tensions between Türkiye and Germany.

Turkey summoned Germany’s ambassador to Ankara on Wednesday to protest against remarks by German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, who called the move “unacceptable.”

Germany responded the next day by summoning the Turkish ambassador to Berlin.

President Erdogan did not react directly to the controversy, but several ministers and the spokesman of his party AKP (Justice and Development Party) denounced the UEFA investigation and the reaction of the German minister.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry condemned the “politically motivated” and “xenophobic reactions of the German authorities towards Demiral.”
