Prochazka admits he fought at UFC 303 with a staph infection

EThe performance of Use Prochazka (30-5-1) against Alex Pereira (11-2) at UFC 303 was below expectations. Knowing the short notice for both, the rematch of last November’s duel was dominated at all times by ‘Poatan’. The champion, in fact, won after knocking him out in the first seconds of the second round.

However, days after the fight, Jiri Prochazka has revealed on ‘CNN’ that he was battling a staph infection before the fight against Alex Pereira:

“The last two weeks have not been good in terms of health… although I said everything was fine, it was not. I had a staph infection, a spot on my body after a bite, an unhealed wound on my leg, a crack in the back after lifting heavy objects.”

The images from the fight confirm the infection, but it must be put into context that many fighters arrive at a fight with some type of ailment. One example is Islam Makhachev at UFC 302 in early June. He suffered from the ailment and beat Poirier in an epic fight.

Bacterial infections are common in MMA. since its practitioners are constantly exposed to sweat, blood or open wounds. Being a contact sport practiced with exposed skin, the possibilities of contagion are multiplied.
