Wimbledon 2024 Tennis: Djokovic lashes out at fans on Centre Court for disrespect

Novak Djokovic (37) accused Wimbledon fans of “disrespect” in a harsh on-court tirade after reaching his 60th Grand Slam quarter-final and 15th at the All England Club on Monday.

World number two Djokovic, seven-time Wimbledon champion and chasing his record 25th Grand Slam title, defeated 15th-ranked Holger Rune 6-3, 6-4, 6-2.

Djokovic then lashed out at a section of the Centre Court crowd who had been chanting “Rune” constantly throughout the match, echoing the “Root” chants popularised by cricket fans in the country in support of former England captain Joe Root.

To all the fans who have been respectful and stayed here tonight, I thank you from the bottom of my heart and I appreciate it,” said an angry Djokovic.

And to all those who have decided to disrespect the player, in this case me, have a good night,” he added, mocking his tormentors.

When the interviewer told him that some fans were chanting “Runa” instead of booing him, Djokovic retorted.

“They did it. They did it. I don’t accept it. No, no, no. I know they were cheering for Rune, but that’s an excuse to boo too.” said.

“Listen, I’ve been on the circuit for over 20 years. I know all the tricks. I focus on respectful people who pay the entrance fee and love tennis and appreciate the players. I’ve played in much more hostile environments, believe me: you can’t touch me.”

The Serb, still sporting a bandage on his right knee after undergoing surgery last month, set the tone for Monday’s fourth-round tie when Rune failed to win a single point in the first three games.

He saved a break point in the 10th game of the second set before securing another key break in the first game of the third.

Djokovic will face ninth-seeded Australian Alex de Minaur for a place in the semi-finals.
