Diario de Cuyo – Microsoft retires one of its most popular programs

After being part of the Windows suite of applications and programs for almost 30 years, Microsoft announced that it will finally remove WordPad in the next update of its W11 operating system.

The news, announced in September 2023 and confirmed this week, generated mixed reactions among users, who are divided between nostalgia for a program that marked a generation and the acceptance that its era has come to an end.

To justify the “retirement” of the program, Microsoft explained that WordPad is a legacy resource, meaning it no longer meets the needs and expectations of current users. The company argues that most people now use more complete word processors such as Word, Drive Docs or even Notepad, which although they do not offer a greater variety of functions, are lighter and faster.

According to the company’s official page, WordPad will be removed from Windows 11 24H2 and Windows Server 2025 and will disappear from the operating system when said update is executed.

How the decision to remove WordPad will affect users

WordPad, a free alternative for those who did not have an Office license to use MS Word, was gradually forgotten. Due to its functions, it was widely used by programmers to write code. Specifically, the discontinuation of WordPad will primarily affect users who rely on it for specific tasks.

Those who do not have access to the Office package, and need a word processor with more functions than Notepad, will have to turn to free and open source alternatives such as LibreOffice Writer or Notepad++, and even Docs, from Google, within Drive.

What was WordPad like?

WordPad was first released in 1995 and has since been present in all versions of the Windows operating system as native word processing software. Its functions and features made it a basic program, halfway between Notepad, a simple plain text editor, and Microsoft Word, a complete word processor.

Its discontinuity marks the end of an era. For many, this text editor was more than just a program; It was a symbol of the golden age of Windows and a tool that accompanied them in their first steps into the digital world. WordPad will undoubtedly leave a void in the memories of those who used it and appreciated its simplicity and usefulness.
