The great RPG from Atlus, until now exclusive to Switch, comes to more platforms and also in Spanish

Although Persona has become Atlus’ most popular franchisethe Japanese do not forget their roots and continue to pamper the fans of their main saga: Shin Megami Tensei. After a fifth exclusive Nintendo Switch installment, now the game returns with a facelift and more content thanks to Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance. I was able to play 3 hours to this new version and, as a veteran of the saga, I am delighted. Let’s see why.

Shin Megami Tensei 5 returns, now with more content

The new version of SMT 5 It is much more than a port with better resolution and better performance. Just as the Japanese company is accustomed to us with premieres such as Strange Journey Redux either Persona 5: Royalin Vengeance there is so much new that justifies a second game even if you have already passed the original. With a new route – which, luckily, you can access from the beginning -, new demons, mechanical improvements, new locations and changes to the gameplay, this is the definitive version of the JRPG.

The Canon of Vengeance gives you changes in the mid and late game

Dividing its story between The Creation Canon—the game’s original plot—and the Canon of Vengeance, now Nahobino will have to face new opponents, but they will also have new allies. It is evident that the new plot of the game is its main attraction, and, without spoilersI have to say that what I saw of her already It convinced me to invest dozens of hours again in this title. And that’s even without counting the rest of the improvements that I’ll discuss later!

Accompanied by a new character, the powerful Yuko Hiromine, the Canon of Revenge is characterized by offering you changes in the middle and final parts of the title, culminating in a new ending. Yes indeed, Yuko is not the only thing that shines in this story, and in my time with the renewed cast of characters of SMT 5one thing that has become clear to me is that Atlus wants to give more presence to these companions, in addition to treating with more care the relationships they have between them while their world is on the verge of absolute collapse.

At a playable level, these characters will enter your party at specific moments in the story and will be completely playable, reminiscent more of Super Nintendo’s Shin Megami Tensei than to IV and Apocalypse. Luckily, you’re not forced to use them if you don’t want to, as they can go back to your demon catalog for you to use your favorite deities at the party, although I have to say that, at least in the segment I played, it’s worth having them by your side in the confrontations.

Of course, it’s not just about allies. Vengeance also introduces a new group of antagonists known as the Qadistu. The Goddesses of Revenge are led by the now iconic Lilith, and their goal is a mystery, but one thing is clear: they want the Nahobino on their side as they wreak havoc on Tokyo and Da’at. . Even so, the rest of the forces They are not going to magically disappear from the boardand the angels, demons, and humans of Shin Megami Tensei V will all have roles to play at this supernatural crossroads.

A new way to interact with your demons

Last but not least, demons are also now more present than ever. In a new area known as the Abode of Demons, you will be able to talk to your demons to get to know them more closely. This will allow you to make them stronger through bonuses such as stat increases, obtaining completely new techniques, as well as getting items as gifts for treating them well. On the other hand, you also have the possibility of talk to your human companionsas well as Aogami himself, who will increase your stats to reflect your growth as a Nahobino.

History is not the only thing that Vengeance has to contribute here, and that is that the changes of gameplay and mechanics have come to further improve a formula that, in itself, already positioned the title of Atlus as one of the best exponents of their genre. With special abilities for each of the demons you get, now their use has even more tactical flair, further marking the dividing line between each of the possible members of your group. Furthermore, regarding these, you will have more than 40 new ones to interact with. There is an impressive cast of companions here.

The game’s new open map: Shinjuku

On the other hand, during my time with Vengeance, I was able to try out the game’s new open map: Shinjuku. The iconic Tokyo neighborhood is the new area that the game has added, and it is a perfect example of the potential that the JRPG’s open maps have. Representing an alternative version of the Japanese city, there is an aesthetic mix between the fantastic and urban, and also a lot of verticality and corners to explore. Without being an open world as such, it is more than entertaining to snoop around all its streets, where you will find chests, optional challenges and tons of secondary missions.

Here I was also able to try another of the title’s new features: Magatsu Rails. These points serve to reach previously unreachable areas of the map, improve navigation – especially when retracing your other steps – and, well, also give you some impressive views, so you can enjoy the graphic facelift that the Atlus title has had. everything improve navigation through environments that was already good is welcome, and this particular change finds the middle ground between ease and restrictions.

A graphical aspect that unleashes the potential of the game

On a technical level, it’s clear that Vengeance is just what Shin Megami Tensei 5 needed. TO 4K 60 FPS on PlayStation 5, a game that was already beautiful on Switch can shine with all the splendor it deserves. It is a title that, without using techniques such as ray tracing, achieves enter the eyes very easily thanks to its characteristic aesthetics. If, in addition, we add other additions to all this, such as the possibility of saving the game wherever you want, consuming several units of some objects at the same time and a soundtrack with 80% of redone songs and 20 new songs, what we are left with is a firm commitment to the world of SMT 5.

In short, I have always felt sorry for having contradictory feelings about SMT 5. On the one hand, it is one of the best RPG that I have played in many years, but on the other hand I felt that there were rough edges to iron out and untapped potential. Now, with Vengeance, the feeling with which I wait for June is one of optimism. With a new story to tell and tons of additions, including the translation to Spanish!, it is clear that this is going to be the definitive version of the Atlus game. I, of course, am clear that I will not let this title pass me by.
