The smartphone market is always competitive, but there are things that do not change, such as Samsung and Apple being at the top of sales, and in the last decade no one has sold more millions of phones than them.

According to AltIndex data, from 2014 to 2014, Samsung has already sold more than 3 billion smartphone units. This is a milestone, as it surpasses Apple by more than 700 million smartphones.

Samsung and Apple, a decade of rivalry with billions of units sold

Samsung and Apple began their “battle” in 2010, when the South Korean technology giant, then a supplier to Apple, launched a product similar to the iPhone through its Galaxy range. Since then, the two brands compete for the title of the world’s largest smartphone seller, with approximately 20% of the market for each.

That does not mean that everything is rosy for the Korean company. And although Samsung has had the lion’s share of the smartphone market since the early days of Android, its market share has decreased significantly in the last ten years.

This has been mainly due to the rise of Chinese competitors Huawei, Xiaomi, Vivo and Oppo. Thus, andIn the first quarter of 2024, the South Korean technology giant held 20.8% of the global smartphone market, up from 30.7% in the first quarter of 2014. This represents close to a 10% loss of market share in the period.

Things will surely not change too much in the coming years, and Samsung and Apple will continue to be the two most important players in the market. It will be interesting, then, to see the strategies they will have during this decade to continue selling at the same pace as before.
