Copilot is no longer just a personal assistant. Now it is integrated into Microsoft Teams to be one of the team

Teamwork with Teams takes a level up with the AI of Team Copilot, a new AI assistant designed to integrate into the Microsoft tool

Microsoft has used its BUILD conference to announce how it plans to take Copilot, its AI assistant, beyond individual tasks. After a debut focused on users being able to use Copilot on their own, the assistant now focuses on teamwork. Specifically, AI is a key member within Teams.

Because it is important. With Team Copilot, the productivity, creativity, and time-saving benefits Copilot offers apply to enterprise teams, not just individuals. The goal is for AI to be a perfect assistant to improve collaborative tasks and agility in project management.

The new capabilities. According to Microsoft, Team Copilot will have different roles:

  • Facilitate meetings by managing the agenda and taking notes that any participant can edit.
  • Moderate groups and summarize relevant information in extensive Teams chats, including answering team questions.
  • Manage projects by ensuring Planner flows when creating and assigning tasks, monitoring deadlines, or notifying a member when their input is required.
  • These capabilities will be available in preview later this year for customers with a Copilot license for Microsoft 365.

The big bet. Microsoft is looking to free teams from more administrative tasks, which consume time and resources, so they can focus on the productive and creative.

The promise is attractive: this poses a scenario like arriving at a meeting in Teams in which Copilot already has the agenda ready, takes notes for us and even answers simple questions. Or open a project in Planner where tasks are already created, assigned and tracked due dates.

The money trail. Microsoft is seeing Team Copilot as an opportunity to turn this increased efficiency into measurable results. That is to say: that the automation of processes and the streamlining of collaboration translates into measurable efficiencies and savings for companies.

The future. Team Copilot is a first look at how Microsoft proposes the future of teamwork marked by AI, which no longer only assists members independently, but also actively participates in the company’s own procedures.

How will this evolve? Only time will tell us, but it points to a work environment in which AI is a ubiquitous and tangential entity that helps by making small decisions and taking care of bureaucracy to free workers from it.
