WhatsApp has two functions that aim to bring its users together in a single chat: communities and groups, two tools that, although they share some similarities, present key differences that make them ideal options for different types of interactions.

The similarities between these two options can confuse users, especially with the Communities section, which is a tool that arrived in the last year and that when you enter it the interface changes in some aspects.

WhatsApp Communities are presented as an organizational structure that allows you to group up to 50 groups (or 100 in some versions) related to the same topic or interest. This feature makes them an ideal tool for managing large communities.for example:

At the moment, events are only available to communities. (WhatsApp)

  • Educational institutions: to organize students, teachers, parents and administrative staff by courses, subjects or extracurricular activities.
  • Clubs and associations: to facilitate communication between members, share relevant information, organize events and manage different sections or committees.
  • Companies and organizations: to create internal work communities, divide departments, share important news and announcements, and encourage collaboration between teams.

Communities on WhatsApp are characterized by a hierarchical structure, where up to 20 administrators are designated with the power to send messages to all members in an “ad group.” This feature allows you to centralize important information and keep the community informed efficiently.

Another fundamental aspect that differentiates Communities from traditional Groups is privacy. In Communities, members can only see the number of participants, not each other’s contact information. This creates a more private and secure environment, especially when it comes to communities with a large number of members or that handle sensitive information.

To facilitate navigation and organization within a Community, WhatsApp incorporates a group menu where users can choose which ones to join. Additionally, each Community has a detailed description that allows new members to understand the main topic and objectives of the group.

To use this feature, this is the process by which you create a community and start managing it:

  1. Access the WhatsApp options menu.
  2. Select the “New Community” option.
  3. Enter the name, description and profile photo of the Community.
  4. Add existing groups or create a new one.
  5. Press the “Send” button.

WhatsApp Groups, for their part, are the classic tool for communication among a group of users within the application. They function as simple spaces where a limited number of people (up to 256 members) can interact, share messages, photos, videos and files in a fluid and direct way.

The Groups are characterized by a flexible dynamic, where all members can actively participate in the conversation. There is no defined hierarchy, and group management can fall to multiple users with the ability to add or remove members, edit group information, etc.

They also encourage the free exchange of content between their members. Unlike Communities, where the administrator has greater control over the information that is shared, In Groups all participants can send and receive messages, photos, videos and files without restrictions.

One of the most popular features of WhatsApp Groups is the ability to make voice and video calls with a limited number of people (up to 8 in some cases). This feature allows for closer and more personal communication between group members.

If you want to create a group in the application, these are the steps to follow:

  1. Access the WhatsApp options menu.
  2. Select the “New chat” option.
  3. Choose the “New group” option.
  4. Select the contacts you want to add to the group.
  5. Press the “Next” button.
  6. Enter a name for the group.
  7. Press the “Create” button.
