Can you imagine being able to touch a new state of matter? Something that combines the magic of light with the fluidity of water. Liquid light is part of Bose-Einstein Condensates (BEC), a category of quantum phenomena where particles behave as a single entity under certain conditions. The history of the Bose-Einstein condensates began in the 1920s with the theoretical works of Albert Einstein and Satyendra Nath Bose. However, a crucial breakthrough towards liquid light was achieved in 2017. A team of scientists led by Daniele Sanvitto at the CNR NANOTEC Nanotechnology Institute in Italy managed to produce liquid light at room temperature. Using an ultrathin film of organic molecules between two very mirrors reflective, bombarded with extremely short laser pulses, they made the photons behave like a superfluid and would appear this “apparent” new state of matter.
