While it is true that Elden Ring has tons of curious characters, few are as mysterious as Dry Leaf Dane, present in the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC. The monk will not speak to you if you try to interact with it, but that doesn’t mean it has no use in this expansion. Below I tell you how to start, do and finish your mission chain. In addition to having a curious story to follow and giving you an extra fight, this is the way to get one of the new weapons in the game: martial arts.
Where to find and how to fight Dry Leaf Dane
During your first hours in the Elden Ring expansion, and after having defeated Land at Ensis Castle, you will arrive at the place of Gracia “Cruz de Altasenda”. Here, in addition to running into Leda and the Pronged One, you will also find the Monk’s Missive, a letter that challenges you to a duel and that comes accompanied by the gesture “May the best win”. With this, you are now equipped to challenge Dane.
Immediately east of this place is the Place of Grace “Ruins of Moorth”, as well as a Miquella Cross. Dry Leaf Dane awaits you there. If you talk to him, he won’t tell you anything, and he is not there to chat, but to see who is the best warrior. Use the gesture which you learned from his missive to challenge him to a duel and you will enter an optional boss fight.
This fight serves you not only to have some more content, but also to see what martial arts are capable of in Elden Ring. Dane’s attacks are not only fast and forceful (although not excessively strong), but they also serve to approach you quickly. My advice, if you have trouble with this fight, is to try to overwhelm your opponent with quick strikes, or to keep your distance and take advantage of combo endings to give a single slow and powerful attack.
