The Milei Government voted against the embargo on Cuba

The United Nations General Assembly approved this Wednesday by an overwhelming majority a resolution that calls for the end of the United States embargo on Cuba.

It is the 32nd time that this has been voted on. The novelty here is that, contrary to the disruptive policies that it had been having Javier Miley before the UN, and his criticism of socialism such as that of the iron Cuban regime, His government voted against the embargo that Cuba calls a “blockade.”

The resolution was presented by Havana at the UN headquarters in New York and was called “Need to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba”. This is more than six decades old.

187 countries voted in favor. Against only 2, the United States and Israel; and only Moldova abstained.

This stressed the “need to end the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States of America against Cuba,” and demands that the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, request member states and other organizations for a report on its compliance in light of the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations and international law and present it to the General Assembly.

The vote was at the UN and Clarín consulted details of the Argentine vote which, with Milei, is fully aligned in its foreign policy with the US and Israel.

Official sources indicated that “voted alongside most Western liberal democracies, in a statement in favor of free trade and freedom of navigation.” They also said that the vote was not “against” anyone, and that it was aligned with national and international law. “Unilateral coercive measures are considered illegal if they do not come from the (United Nations) Security Council. Furthermore, a precedent that could affect Argentina in other scenarios is not favored.”

Another possible explanation, other sources told Clarín, is the important role of the island of Cuba and its allies before the UN Decolonization Committee. Year after year, a resolution from this gives Argentina reason in its demand to the United Kingdom to begin a peaceful discussion on the sovereignty of the Malvinas.

A setback there would be a kind of “diplomatic tragedy” for Argentina. With which, Milei would have listened to the advice of the ministry led by Foreign Minister Diana Mondino.

Cuban defense of the Malvinas

In the last General Assembly of the United Nations, where President Milei participated, the Foreign Minister of Cuba, Bruno Rodríguez, was the only one who defended Argentina. “We support the legitimate right of sovereignty of the Argentine people over the Malvinas, South Sandwich and South Georgia Islands and the surrounding maritime spaces,” he expressed on behalf of his country.

Now, faced with this vote, the president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, celebrated on his account in X, where he noted that “little David once again defeated the giant Goliath.”

He added: “Little Cuba has once again defeated the empire neighbor who, surely, will arrogantly ignore the global demand, but the dignity of this people and universal solidarity have once again defeated him,” added the president, along with the hashtag #TumbaElBloqueo.

For his part, the chancellor of the Cuban regime tweeted: “New victory for Cuba, justice and truth in the @UN_es General Assembly. The United States government has been left once again isolated in the face of this forceful condemnation to put an end to the genocidal and obsolete blockade that causes so much damage to the Cuban people.

According to information from the Cuban dictatorship, the cost of the harsh sanctions that the United States applies to the island as part of an old policy that was imposed in the middle of the Cold War – and that hits the people more than their leaders – between March 2023 and February 2024 it amounted to 5,056.8 million dollars.

As a result of isolation, and the inefficiency of its economy, Cuba suffers from lack of medicines and food. It has no fuel; suffers from massive and prolonged blackouts. In addition, it has high inflation; lives in dollarization and with it there is a deterioration of state omniservices such as education and health.
