The strategic markets of the United Kingdom, Germany, France and the United States have increased their tourist spending in Spain by more than 10% between January and August of this year, according to the data shown by the tourism advisors of those countries during the IV Turespaña Convention last week.
Firstly, the British country continues to be the main sending market to Spain. Spending has increased by 16% in the first eight months compared to the same period in 2023, reaching 15,758 million euros, receiving 12.6 million tourists, 7.8% more.
As a characteristic in this market, the advisor in London, Manuel Butler, highlighted that “the tendency to book late and travel in the middle season, the months of October and November, is growing, which favors deseasonalization.”
For its part, Germany is the second market in tourist spending, with 10,305 million euros accumulated (+17.7%), and the third in tourist arrivals, registering more than eight million arrivals until August, 9.3% further.
The Minister of Tourism in Berlin, Álvaro Blanco, has highlighted that, despite a “somber” economic and political context, German tourism demand maintains the strength that it has been showing during the summer season for the winter season. with Spain as the “leading foreign destination for the year as a whole”.
Likewise, the French market to Spain “has shown excellent performance in 2023 and in the first months of 2024”, as detailed by the Minister of Tourism in Paris, María José Gómez. Until August, it has accumulated spending of 7,886 million euros, 11.9% more, and 9.2 million tourists have been received, the second issuing country, with a year-on-year increase of 110%.
The counselor explained that “thanks to its proximity, the French market has registered an increase of more than 15% in the winter months, which contributes to advancing the deseasonalization of our tourism.” In addition, he added that it is the first tourist issuing market for 9 autonomous communities, which “reinforces its strategic importance from the point of view of a better distribution of flows and its importance as a key market.”
Finally, the United States has consolidated itself as the fourth market in tourist spending in Spain, reaching a total of 6,282 million euros until August, which represents a growth of 23.4% year-on-year.
For the Minister of Tourism in New York, Magí Castelltort, “the US market will break spending records in Spain in 2024, although it will grow at a slower pace in the coming months.”
