Jannik Sinner continues to cause fear at the Shanghai Masters 1,000. The Italian tennis player, world number one and first favorite for the title, has become the first tennis player to reach the quarterfinals after beat the American Ben Shelton in his round of 16 match 6-4 and 7-6 (1) after almost an hour and a half of the match in which the Italian was close to perfection against a very brave Shelton who failed in key moments.
The match began with Shelton and Sinner intractable on serve, especially the American, who did not lose a single point on serve in his first four games. However, the first time Sinner had a break point, the Italian did not fail to break serve and consolidate with a blank game to close the first set 6-4.
In the second round the trend was repeated although on this occasion it was Sinner who took forward his games with the blank serve (he ended up with 87% of points won with first serve) although Shelton had two break chances in the sixth game that Sinner avoided and three more in the eighth, where the Italian saved a 0-40 deficit. (Sinner saved all seven break points he faced in the match). This is how the set went to the tie-break, where An effective Sinner (he only committed five unforced errors in the entire match) snatched two minibreaks from Shelton before a third that would be the sentence and allowed Sinner to close the set and the match 7-6 (1).
Sinner will have a very tough challenge in the quarterfinals, as he will face the winner of the match between the Russian Daniil Medvedev and the Greek Stefanos Tsitsipasin the Italian’s last crossing before the long-awaited and hypothetical semifinal with Carlos Alcaraz.
