cold and northern lights – Telemundo New York (47)

NEW YORK — Despite sunny skies, Thursday in the tri-state area will feel noticeably cooler than the last few days, with highs this afternoon in the 50s and low 60s.

Our first frost warning of the season is in effect Thursday night for the interior, where overnight low temperatures may fall near or below freezing. Although it will be cold, clear skies will provide optimal conditions for viewing the Northern Lights, which could be visible in our northern counties on Thursday night and Friday morning.

Florencia Giménez with the details.

Temperatures will begin to recover and on Saturday afternoon we should enjoy much warmer temperatures, exceeding 70 degrees. Enjoy the warm temperatures because there will be a cold front approaching on Sunday that will not only bring more clouds to the area, but also the possibility of some overnight showers, which we need with drought conditions expanding into the Hudson Valley due to the lack of rain in recent weeks.

This front will also open the door to much colder air with afternoon highs falling into the 50s for the start of the work week and even snowflakes possible in parts of the Hudson Valley by Tuesday.

MILTON

Following its historic arrival as a Category 3 hurricane last night near Siesta Key, Florida, Milton crossed the state overnight as a Category 2 hurricane and this morning heads into the Atlantic as a Category 1 hurricane, where it will most likely become a extratropical low pressure system as it passes north of the Bahamas and south of Bermuda in the coming days. Today, tropical storm and hurricane warnings remain in effect for Florida’s northeast and central coast, which still faces the threat of flash flooding, storm surge near 3 feet, and hurricane-force winds.
