Months after presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni reported that the Kirchner Cultural Center (CCK) would change its name, the president Javeir Milei announced this Wednesday on his X account that the CCK will be named from Palacio Libertad Cultural Center Domingo Faustino Sarmientoas several officials already called him, including the Secretary of Culture Leonardo Cifelli. The measure is expected to be made official in the Official Gazette in the coming days.

The Government makes official the name change of the CCK to PALACIO LIBERTAD and holds an event with the presence of President Milei -it is read on the social network-. This Saturday a symphony orchestra will play the hymn to Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. The workers there are already removing all the signage. VLLC!”

Saturday marks the 150th anniversary of the end of Sarmiento’s presidency (1868-1874). That day, in a ceremony exclusive for cabinet members and guests, it will be held at 7 p.m. the name change act, which will be broadcast live on the Casa Rosada YouTube channel. The press that is accredited can access a sector on the esplanade, but cannot enter the -now it does- ex-CCK.

As was the case with the CCK, the new name of the most important cultural center in the country echoes echoes of supporters, on this occasion, of La Libertad Avanza. The Government leads the “cultural battle” on different fronts, including the symbolic one. The name change was made by decree of necessity and urgency, and not by law, one day after the Government managed to uphold the veto on university financing with the support of Justicialist legislators and Together for Change. A decree of necessity and urgency has the force of law if it is not rejected by both chambers of Congress.

The ruling party thus concretizes another of the aspirations that Macrismo could not realize during his government, when he tried to replace the name of the CCK. The Ministry of Culture informed LA NACION that the changes in the building (the façade, for example, where it still reads “Kirchner Cultural Center”) would begin to be seen gradually.

Hours after LLA’s victory at the polls, in November 2023, provincial deputy Agustín Romo had proposed the name of Julio Argentino Roca for the CCK. Others suggested that it be called Astor Piazzolla, René Favaloro, Jorge Luis Borges or that the original name be used again – Bicentennial Cultural Center – which Kirchnerism replaced in 2012 by law 26,794. In March, for the first time, Adorni announced that they would make the change and in May, for the first time, there was talk of Palacio Libertad.
