Jaden Ivey scored 23 points and Cade Cunningham added 22 as the Detroit Pistons earned their first win of the season, defeating the host Philadelphia 76ers 105-95 on Wednesday.
Detroit’s Tobias Harris, who spent the previous five and a half seasons with Philadelphia, contributed 18 points and 14 rebounds, both season highs. The Pistons, who had lost their first four games, also received key contributions from Tim Hardaway Jr. (16 points), Malik Beasley (11 points) and Isaiah Stewart (seven points, 11 rebounds).
Tyrese Maxey led the Sixers with 32 points, but was just 2-for-10 from three-point range, part of a team-wide 8-for-28 (28.6 percent) effort from long range. Kelly Oubre Jr. recorded 13 points, while rookie Jared McCain scored 12 points, his first double-digit effort of his career.
The 76ers are still without stars Joel Embiid and Paul George due to knee injuries.
The Sixers led 13-4 at the start of the game and after the first quarter they took a 26-22 lead. Maxey scored 10 points in the first quarter.
However, Detroit won the second quarter 32-19 thanks to Cunningham’s 13 points. Maxey opened the period with a dunk before the visitors scored 15 straight points, a span that included two 3-pointers from Cunningham and one from Beasley.
With five minutes left in the first half, Philadelphia closed within 39-38. That momentum didn’t last long, however, as back-to-back 3-pointers from Hardaway and Ivey extended the lead to seven points and the Pistons led 54-45 at halftime.
About four minutes into the third quarter, Cunningham and Hardaway hit 3-pointers off a Harris layup to extend the lead to 69-54.
Detroit’s lead increased to 21 when Beasley’s 3-pointer made it 79-58 with 3:19 left in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, a Caleb Martin jumper brought the home team within 91-79 with just under seven minutes left. On Detroit’s next possession, Stewart took advantage of a Harris miss and found Hardaway for a three-pointer that restored the lead to 14 points.
