The owner of the Union of Tourism, Hotel and Gastronomic Workers (UTHGRA), Luis Barrionuevo, He left the intensive care unit at the Güemes Sanitarium after suffering a Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) last week. The union leader had been urgently hospitalized six days ago, when he suffered a decomposition.
“The evolution is excellent and he has already left intensive care. It is completely stable and moves freely around the room. He will remain hospitalized for now,” he told THE NATION Conrado Estol, director of the Stroke Unit of the Güemes sanatorium. In a previous medical report it had been stated that it was “a small volume brain bleed.”
Barrionuevo, 82 years old, has been head of the gastronomic union since 1979. He came to the union as a normalizing delegate during the last dictatorship and only in democracy did he win the elections for the union that he leads to this day. His entry into politics and unionism took place in 1970, when he joined the San Martín de Gastronómicos section, from where five years later he came to occupy by force and armed hand the national union led by Ramón Elorza. With the return of democracy, based on the normalization of the unions ordered by the government of Raúl Alfonsín, he won the elections in the UTHGRA in 1985. He never left power again. The only challenge to his leadership in decades came from his former brother-in-law, Dante Camañohead of the Capital Section of the UTHGRA and with whom he had a fierce judicial fight for control of the union for three years.
His daughter Sandra works in the Social Action area of the union, in charge of social work and who appears as the possible heir. The union led by Barrionuevo is a shareholder in the Sanatorio Güemes, of which the new Minister of Health, Mario Lugones, was until recently director. In some conversation, Lugones referred to Barrionuevo and the operator Enrique “Coti” Nosiglia as “my partners,” according to what he reconstructed.
