Los Angeles:
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a quarter pound of fresh chopped onions and other McDonald’s menu items in the US contain E. coli is a possible source of outbreak.
A total of 90 cases caused by E. coli have been reported in 13 US states as of Wednesday, including 15 new cases, according to the latest CDC data.
Among those cases, 27 people were hospitalized and one died, the Xinhua news agency reported.
The CDC said more illnesses were reported, but that was before McDonald’s and Taylor Farms took action to remove onions from food service locations.
Because of the actions taken by both companies on the products, the CDC said they believe the risk to the public is very low.
E. coli is a bacteria that can be found in many places, including the environment, food, water, and intestines of humans and animals.
The majority e. coli is harmless and is part of a healthy intestine. However, some e. coli can cause diarrhea, urinary tract infections, pneumonia, sepsis and other illnesses, according to the CDC.
