BOISE, Idaho (KBOI) — The trial of a man charged with the deaths of his wife and his girlfriend’s youngest children begins in Idaho Monday.

Jury selection will begin at the Ada County Courthouse for the trial in which Chad Daybell faces the death penalty.

The 55-year-old is charged with first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit murder of his wife, Tammy Daybell, 7-year-old JJ Vallow and 16-year-old Tylee Ryan. JJ and Tylee were the children of his now-wife Lori Vallow Daybell.

Chad and Lori were married just days after Tammy Daybell was buried. At the time, Tammy Daybell’s death was ruled natural causes. It wasn’t until JJ and Tylee’s remains were discovered in Chad’s backyard that investigators exhumed her remains and re-examined everything as a suspicious death.

Investigators began looking into the disappearance of JJ and Tylee after their Grandma, Kay Woodcock, first called the police requesting a welfare check. Investigators soon realized that no one had seen or heard from either of the children in weeks. Chad and Lori began lying to detectives about their whereabouts before they fled to Hawaii.

A Judge issued a court order demanding that Lori present the children before the court. The court date came and went, and Lori remained in Hawaii, refusing to answer any questions. Shortly after, Lori was arrested and quickly extradited back to Idaho where she was initially charged with abandonment.

Investigators would soon find JJ and Tylee’s remains buried in Chad Daybell’s backyard. Chad was on the phone with Lori while she was in jail as investigators began searching the backyard. He attempted to flee in his truck, but police quickly stopped him and he was taken into custody.

Evidence revealed during Lori Vallow Daybell’s trial, which occurred last year, showed a dramatic end for the children. JJ was wrapped in several plastic bags and duct-taped tightly around his face and hands. He was buried underneath a tree, along with a strand of Lori’s hair which was stuck between the plastic bag and duct tape.

Tylee’s remains were burnt and mangled began recognition. Multiple attempts at dismembering her remains of her were evident, and her remains of her had been severely burned.

Lori was found guilty of murder and conspiracy to commit murder in all three deaths. She was sentenced to multiple life sentences.

She was extradited to Arizona where she faces conspiracy to commit murder charges for the death of her previous husband Charles Vallow, and in the attempted murder of her niece’s husband, Brandon Beaudreaux.

The couple claimed they could tell if people had been possessed by dark spirits that could turn them into “zombies,” former friend Melanie Gibb testified in court. They believed the only way to get rid of a zombie was to destroy the possessed person’s body by killing them.

The couple’s friends later told detectives that the pair also held unusual religious beliefs, including that they had been reincarnated and were tasked with gathering people before a biblical apocalypse.
