With the presence of the former Cobreloa and U. de Chile striker on the bench, Atlético Mineiro beat Peñarol 3-2 for the Copa Libertadores. The French team of Turboman achieved its third victory in the contest and leads its group, against a Peñarol that only has one victory.

In a tremendous match for the third date of the group stage in the Copa Libertadores, Eduardo Vargas’ Atlético Mineiro achieved a tight 3-2 victory at home against Peñarol, played in Belo Horizonte. The French team managed to take the three points, despite a commendable but insufficient attack by Manya in the second half.

Very comfortable first half for the Brazilian team, who with a good game and putting pressure on the Uruguayan team, opened the score in the 15th minute thanks to Gustavo Scarpa who finished off the good pass to the center sent by Paulinho.

Then, at 26′, a very bad start by Guzmán Rodríguez was taken advantage of by Paulinho himself who anticipated the defender, stole the ball from him in front of him and scored without problems for the second of the day.

Already in the second half, a very good start from the back ended with Hulk’s touch for Scarpa who was open on the right, adjusted his body and finished with a very good low left foot shot, close to the goalkeeper’s far post.

However, Peñarol took advantage of the Uruguayan goal and reached injury time with a great goal in the 60th minute. After a center from a corner and the goalkeeper’s clearance, Diego Sosa took the center into the area and the former University of Chile, Leandro Fernández, captured the ball and took a bicycle kick cross and connected it with a header Maximiliano Olivera for the goal.

Shortly after, in the 69th minute, a very good triangulation on the left between Sosa, Olivera and Ramírez, ended with the latter’s low center and, with a sort of rebound, Silvera’s goal for the second stoppage time.

Peñarol continued to press and had some very good chances to achieve the third of the tie, however, that effort was not enough and Mineiro held on to close their victory.

Thanks to the three points, Mineiro reached nine points and leads Group G, followed by Rosario Central’s four, Peñarol third with three and Caracas closes, with only one unit.

On the next date, Atlético Mineiro will visit Rosario Central on Tuesday 05/07 at 6:00 p.m. For its part, Peñarol will be an outsider against Caracas on the same day and at the same time.
