British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said Monday that the plan proposed to the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas for a mission in Gaza includes a 40-day ceasefire.

Cameron said in Riyadh at the World Economic Forum (WEF) that Hamas had received “a very generous offer of a 40-day ceasefire, the potential release of thousands of Palestinian prisoners, in return for the release of hostages” held captive in Gaza since the 7 October attack.

A Hamas delegation is due to meet Monday in Cairo with representatives of Egypt and Qatar to respond to the latest trick proposal in Gaza after nearly seven months of war.

“I hope Hamas will accept this deal and, frankly, all the pressure in the world and all the eyes of the world should be on them today to tell them to accept that deal,” Cameron said, adding that the proposal would lead to a “cessation of fighting that we all want so badly.”

Egypt, Qatar and the US have been trying for months to broker a deal between Israel and Hamas.

The British foreign secretary said that for there to be a “political horizon for a two-state solution”, those responsible for 7 October, the Hamas leadership, would have to leave Gaza and the terrorist infrastructure in Gaza would have to be dismantled.”

“You have to consider a political future for the Palestinian people, but you also have to consider security for Israel and those two things have to go together,” I have added.
