His execution generated international solidarity among workers. In 1889, the Second Socialist International declared May 1 as International Workers’ Day, honoring the Chicago events and remembering the fight for labor rights.

In Spain, the adoption of May 1 as a national holiday took place in the 20th century. Although It began to be celebrated in 1931, during the Franco dictatorship it was abolished.
