History of Worker’s Day
At the end of the 19th century, American workers demanded a eight hour work day, but the long hours persisted despite some government concessions. In response, the Unions in Chicago called a strike on May 1, 1886.
The protestinitially peaceful, It turned violent on May 3 when police cracked down on protesters at the McCormick factory, resulting in the death of several workers and stoking public outrage. The next day, in Haymarket Square, a bomb thrown at police unleashed chaos, causing the death of protesters and agents. This incident, known as the Haymarket Massacremarked a crucial point in the history of the labor movement.
Eight union leaders were arrested and sentenced, becoming the “Chicago Martyrs”, despite the lack of evidence linking them to the attack. His execution generated international solidarity among workers. In 1889, the Second Socialist International declared May 1 as International Workers’ Day, honoring the Chicago events and remembering the fight for labor rights.
Since when is it a holiday in Spain
In Spain, the adoption of May 1 as a national holiday took place in the 20th century. Although It began to be celebrated in 1931, during the Franco dictatorship it was abolished. With the advent of the democracy, Labor Day was restored as a holiday, allowing workers to take to the streets to demand their rights.
