“Shrimp farmers asked the Government to establish relations with China”, because Taiwan was no longer profitable: Minister Pastor – Hondudiario

*** More than a year after establishing diplomatic relations with China, the trade agreement has not yet been signed and the shrimp farmers do not have the conditions to export to that country and now they say they are looking to sell it in South Korea.

Presidency Minister Rodolfo Pastor de María revealed that the country’s shrimp producers asked the Government to “specifically establish relations with China to open a market for them there,” considering that the demand for the product with Taiwan was decreasing.

The Minister expressed the above in an interview with a television news program, which asked him about the problems that the country’s shrimp producers are experiencing, who have denounced the closure of farms and the loss of some 10,000 jobs in the region. south of the country, because they have not been able to export their product.

Pastor de María said that the shrimp sector “what they warned us long before we established diplomatic relations with China, is that there was a decrease in demand from Taiwan and they sent us a request that “We supported them by diversifying the markets and they specifically suggested establishing relations with China to open a market for them there.”

In this sense, he indicated that; «That market has already opened, now we must take on the challenge as producers of being competitive, of winning over a clientele like the one represented by China of 1.4 billion people and in that sense we believe that there is an enormous opportunity that they must take advantage of. What challenges are still missing.

More than a year after establishing diplomatic relations and a trade agreement with China has not been signed, Pastor said “they are finishing negotiating a free trade agreement with China and that free trade agreement is precisely going to achieve us, it will “to allow us to have guarantees for our producers, so that our products can compete in a market as formidable and competitive as China.”

Considering that the country’s shrimp producers have problems exporting, Minister Pastor said that the Government is “working precisely so that those producers who have been losing due to the decrease in demand for shrimp from Taiwan can access not only the China market, by the way, we are also working with South Korea so that they can find a niche market there that can pay a very important price for that shrimp.
