Active Talks Held on Direct Flights between Airports of Burgas and Istanbul, Says Pomorie Mayor

Active talks are being held about opening direct flights between Burgas Airport and Istanbul Airport, which is one of the largest in the world, Pomorie Mayor Ivan Alexiev said in an interview with BTA on Thursday. Alexiev was elected Deputy Chair of the Board of the newly established Burgas Airport Development Fund.

“By October we will have finalized the talks for the opening of at least two new routes to Airport Burgas. One of the opportunities we should not miss is the attraction of Turkish Airlines and the opening of the Burgas-Istanbul route. This will literally connect our airport to the whole world,” said Alexiev. He added that talks with other airlines are also underway.

As announced by the mayors of Black Sea municipalities in March, the municipal administrations united in a non-profit association, which aims to finance a new fund to stimulate year-round flights from and to Burgas Airport. Alexiev noted that the documents for the registration of the association have already been submitted to the court, and a decision on the formalization of the organization is expected in the middle of May. I have noted that it is not yet known how the state will get involved in the Development Fund, adding that this could happen through the budget of the Tourism Ministry or through the Sunny Beach EAD joint stock company.
