Nagpur: A major fire broke out late Sunday night near the RTO office in Civil Lines, engulfing an illegal shed of RTO agent Bablu Bishwas and a neighboring eating joint at Priyadarshini Housing Society. The residential Priyadarshini Colony off Amravati Road is surrounded by illegal shanties of RTO agents. Many of them have reportedly encroached on RTO land for their offices, hinting at collusion with officials. The fire was first spotted by Mohammad Farooq around 11.35pm in the shed. He immediately informed NMC’s fire department control room. A fire tender from Civil Lines fire station reached the scene. However, the fire spread to the nearby Charcoal Restaurant, owned by Aatish Gupta, and other sheds, destroying furniture and materials worth lakhs. After about an hour of hard work, the fire was brought under control. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined, but it is suspected to have started from a burning cigarette end igniting plastic chairs in the RTO agent’s shed. The incident caused significant damage, but there were no immediate reports of any casualties. The fire department’s prompt response helped prevent spread of the fire. tnn
