EL NUEVO DIARIO, TAIPEI.- The Taiwanese Government made a donation of 500,000 US dollars (about 465,000 euros) to an NGO to provide humanitarian assistance to the population of the Gaza Strip, official sources on the island reported this Thursday.

In a press conference, the head of the Department of West Asian and African Affairs of the Foreign Ministry of Taiwan, Anthony Ho, stated that the donation was sent to Mercy Corps, an American humanitarian aid organization, to provide food, drinking water , clothing and tents to those affected by the war between Israel and Hamas.

This donation, made through Taiwan’s representative office in Jordan, took around three months to process, because the island has no official presence in Gaza, Ho said.

The Taiwanese Government strongly condemned the surprise attack by the Islamist movement Hamas, considered terrorist by the United States and the European Union, on Israel on October 7, which left some 1,200 dead and more than two hundred kidnapped.

Since then, the island has made several donations to Israel through its representative office in that country, including one of $500,000 last month, and has reiterated its support for the Tel Aviv government on numerous occasions.

In this sense, Ho urged the parties involved in the conflict to agree to a new truce as soon as possible.

“We hope to see some mediations and conversations that bring peace to that region,” the official said.

Taiwan’s donation was announced in the midst of an Israeli offensive in the town of Rafah, which has raised the total death toll from the war to nearly 35,000.
