A 37-year-old man has been charged with murder after a man was found dead in the stairwell of a car park at a regional train station.

NSW Police were called after the grim discovery was made on Station Street, next to Wollongong train station around 7.20am on Sunday.

The dead man is believed to be a 68-year-old local, but he is yet to be formally identified.

A 37-year-old man was arrested at Crown Street at 10.40am on Sunday, and later charged with murder.

He was refused bail and was scheduled to appear before Wollongong Local Court on Monday.

Officers, alongside homicide squad detectives, set up a crime scene in the area and established Strike Force Alleppo to investigate the death.

Staff at the train station are understood to have found the body of the man on level one, near the western side of the carpark, the Daily Telegraph reported.

The area is known to be frequented by people who sleep rough.
