Downpours to Dump Half a Foot of Rain In East Texas

East Texas needs some drying out time. At least a week’s worth of rain-free days would go a long way in helping the area recover from a very wet Spring. However, the forecast for Thursday and Friday doesn’t look promising.

Forecasters Anticipate Another Flood Watch for East Texas

Another storm system is on the way to the Pineywoods. Downpours are expected to start Thursday and last until early Friday morning. The National Weather Service in Shreveport forecasts the highest rainfall totals to occur between 6 pm and midnight on Thursday.

Area rain gauges could top over 6 inches of rain by the time Saturday arrives.

It’s almost a certainty that a Flood Watch will be issued on Wednesday in advance of the expected downpours. Much of the region between Nacogdoches and Houston and Beaumont is expected to receive at least 3 inches of rain.

The map above indicates that anyone living in the red-shaded counties such as Angelina, Nacogdoches, and Polk has a 40% chance of experiencing flash flooding within 25 miles of their residence.

Given the saturated ground as well as creeks and rivers well above the flood stage, these downpours could lead to life-threatening flooding. Please monitor the weather and download our station app to have weather alerts sent to your smartphone.

What About Severe Storms?

This approaching system is expected to produce strong to severe storms, with the highest concentration of those happening across central Texas. Large hail and damaging winds will be possible across east Texas.
