May Gardaí confirm death of female motorist following N17 collision

Gardaí in Mayo have confirmed that a female motorist died in a three-vehicle collision along the N17 outside Claremorris this afternoon.

A woman believed to be in her 50s was pronounced dead at the scene following a three-vehicle collision at Castlemagarrett along the N17 between Claremorris and Ballindine. The collision occurred at approximately 11.50am this morning.

It is believed a car turning right at the Crossboyne junction along the N17 was rear ended and driven into the path of an oncoming vehicle.

The emergency services were called to the scene and the occupants of the vehicles were treated at the scene. The N17 road outside Claremorris was closed to traffic.

A female driver of one of the cars which was driving south along the N17 was pronounced dead at the scene. She is believed to be in her 50s and lived locally.

The drivers of the other two vehicles were transported to hospital to be treated for what are described as non-life threatening injuries.

An Garda Siochána closed the road to allow for an investigation by the forensic collision investigators and diversions were put in place. A spokesperson for An Garda Siochana stated that it is hoped the road will be reopened at approximately 5pm.

This is the third fatal collision to have occurred along the N17 in recent months. At the end of March, Una Bowden, aged 47, and her daughters Ciara, aged 14, and 9-year-old Saoirse from Moycullen, Co Galway were killed in a collision along the N17 at Castlegar, Claremorris and a few days later 17-year-old Vakaris Gudaitis died after he was struck by a vehicle at Barnacarroll, 8km north of Claremorris.
