Several people were injured in an explosion in downtown Rochester, Michigan, Saturday. According to the Rochester Police Michigan, the explosion was caused after a propane tank caught fire near a restaurant on the Main Street.

Several people were injured in an explosion in downtown Rochester, Michigan, on Saturday. Rochester Police Michigan reported that the incident occurred when a propane tank near a restaurant on Main Street caught fire. Five patients, including children, were transported to local hospitals with injuries, while two others were treated at the scene and later released. As of now, the condition of the five victims is unknown.

Videos captured at the scene showed civilians attending multiple victims on the sidewalk, including applying a tourniquet to one man’s leg. These videos were taken before police and first responders arrived.

Mark Mendola, the owner of D’Marcos Restaurant, told FOX 2 that the explosion might have been triggered by a propane tank used for an outdoor heating lamp at a neighboring restaurant.

“It just rattled everyone in the restaurant,” he told the station.

Residents in the vicinity reported a lingering gas odor following the explosion. People were advised to avoid the area. As investigation continues, Main Street will remain closed between Fourth and University.

Rochester Police Michigan released the following statement on Facebook-

“Tonight at approximately 8:45p, a propane tank outside a business on Main Street between University and caught Fourth fire and shortly after exploded. Police and Fire units responded and treated three patients for serious injuries and several others for minor injuries. The scene “It is still under investigation but the cause is believed to be accidental. Main Street will be closed from Fourth to University for several hours until the area is safe again for travel.”
