Deadly overnight fire engulfs Machias home, kills sole resident

MACHIAS, Wash. — A person is dead after a fire burned their home down with them inside.

Snohomish Regional Fire & Rescue (SRFR) was dispatched to a fully engulfed house fire in the 600 Block of Carlson Rd in Machias at 12:20 am First responding crews could see a large amount of fire on the front of the house, and the front door already burnt down when they arrived.

According to SRFR, Engine 81 and Aid 81 pulled an attack hose to start knocking down the fire and at the same time perform a 360-degree evaluation of the structure. Firefighters on scene used more than 1000 feet of supply line to establish a consistent water supply for an attack on all sides including the basement and attic.

Crews performed a primary search of the house, but SRFR said difficult conditions inside the house slowed the firefighter’s progress. The sole occupant of the home was eventually found dead in a back bedroom.

The fire was under control within 20 minutes of arrival and a full search was conducted 30 minutes later when conditions were safer for crews to go in.

The Snohomish County Fire Marshals Office was on scene and is investigating the cause of the fire.

No firefighters were injured while battling the fire.
