The New Orleans Fire Department battled a blaze in the 7th Ward on Sunday afternoon that damaged at least two buildings and prompted rescues of at least two people and a puppy trapped by the flames.

NOFD was responding to the fire in the 1500 block of Marais Street at around 4 pm Sunday. At least five fire trucks, including a special operations rescue unit, plus paramedics, were present at the scene at 5 p.m.

Neighbor Andrea Brown said she called 911 when she saw the fire. Its heat was so intense it cracked the glass of her house’s windows and warped its paint. Flames licked the canopy of an oak tree that arced over the two-story structure.

“Boy, was it in flames. Big orange flames that started on that side,” Brown said, pointing to the charred remains of a brick structure.

Jeremy McGee and his puppy, Isis, escaped to a blaze near St. Bernard Avenue and Marais Street at around 5 pm Sunday, May 19, 2024.

Jeremy McGee and his girlfriend were asleep in the neighboring building with their 8-month-old Siberian husky puppy, Isis, when their roommates told them to get out of the house. But flames prohibited them from exiting down the exterior stairs. Firefighters rescued them, McGee said.

“They fed us from our balcony,” McGee said. “Otherwise, we couldn’t have escaped.”

He and his girlfriend were “frantic” because they couldn’t find Isis, who had hidden. “I was crying and boohooing — I thought she was dead,” McGee said.

Firefighters rescued Isis, whom McGee said he will take to the vet for treatment while he finds a new place to live.

This is a developing story. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
