Mohali: A local court has sentenced three men to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of a vegetable vendor, while two others were acquired due to insufficient evidence against them. The judgment was delivered by special court judge Baljinder Singh Sra, who found Shubham, Ankit Kumar, and Vipan guilty under Section 302 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Additionally, the convicts were sentenced to three years of rigorous imprisonment under Section 453 of the IPC with a fine of Rs 2,000, and two years under Section 148 of the IPC. .The heinous crime occurred on Nov 26, 2021, in Nayagaon, Mohali, where the accused killed Rakesh Kumar, a vegetable vendor, using sharp-edged weapons over a dispute regarding purchase of vegetables on credit. When Rajesh insisted on payment, the situation escalated, leading to his tragic death. The victim was rushed to a hospital in Chandigarh, but succumbed to his injuries during treatment. Initially, the case was registered against unidentified persons, but following the statement of the victim’s wife, five suspects were booked under Sections 302, 453, and 148 of the IPC at Nayagaon police station.
