THANE: The murder accused, who was arrested by Uttar Pradesh police for the killing of a journalist initially from Bhiwandi and subsequently escaped from Khandwa railway station, has been successfully tracked down by police in Padgha near Bhiwandi recently

The accused, identified as Jamiruddin Qureshi (48), had been on the run since his daring escape, prompting a widespread manhunt. Qureshi was arrested in Bhiwandi for the murder of Ashutosh Shrivastav (43), a journalist with a news channel in Jaunpur. Following the incident, Qureshi fled Jaunpur and was found hiding in Bhiwandi.

The anti-extortion cell of the Thane crime branch was assigned the task and successfully arrested Qureshi in Bhiwandi. After completing the legal formalities, the Thane police handed Qureshi over to a UP police. The UP police secured a transit remand from the local court and chose the railway route to transport Qureshi back to Jaunpur. However, as their express train approached the Khandwa railway station, Qureshi used the pretext of needing the restroom to jump off the slow-moving train and escape.

Later, the accused took another express train and came back to Padgha near Bhiwandi. The police were able to narrow down the fugitive’s location to Padgha. Upon confirmation of his whereabouts, a coordinated raid was conducted with Padgha police, leading to Qureshi’s re-arrest without incident.

Qureshi is now in custody and will be transferred back to Uttar Pradesh to face charges related to the journalist’s murder.
