Chennai: More than 10 passengers were injured after a Bengaluru-Chennai private bus they were traveling in ran into a roadside ditch near Sunguvarchathiram. Police are investigating if the driver dozed off. The police said that the bus left Bengaluru on Saturday with around 30 passengers. When it reached Santhamangalam in Sunguvarchathiram in the wee hours, the driver lost control of the vehicle, and it ran into a roadside ditch adjacent to a tea shop. The front portion of the bus hit a heap of garbage before coming to a halt. The window panes broke on impact. Passengers who were sitting in the front seats were injured. Passersby and other passengers rescued the injured and rushed them to the Sriperumbudur govt hospital. “It is suspected that the driver drove the vehicle fast and lost control. “We are also checking if he has dozed off,” he told a police officer. A case has been registered.K Bhaskar, who uses the stretch regularly, said the road expansion work is going on at snail’s pace. “There are a lot of traffic amusements on the highway, but buses don’t reduce their speed. This not only puts them in danger but other motorists too. The lighting is also poor,” he said. There have been multiple accidents on the highways since last week. Around 13 people died in three accidents on national highways in Chengalpet. “The Chennai-Bengaluru highway is a crucial stretch. There should be some pro-active measures by the local police in implementing interventions to reduce accidents. We don’t see any police presence,” said Kumaresan, another frequent traveler.
