Over $200k lost in Baton Rouge storage fire | Crime/Police

Over $200,000 in damages was sustained in a storage facility fire that also left two firefighters hospitalized, the Baton Rouge Fire Department said Sunday.

Firefighters were called to Storage Rentals of America at 11500 S. Harrell’s Ferry Road around 5:15 am Sunday. Heavy smoke and fire was found coming from the rear of the building, the department said.

“It is believed the fire began in or around the first-floor entrance before [extending] into several of the storage units on both floors,” the department said in a news release.

Nearly half of the units and their contents were damaged by the fire, the department said. The other remaining units and contents sustained significant smoke and water damage.

According to the news release, two firefighters were taken to a hospital for dehydration. Both are expected to be released once treatment is complete.

The fire was contained by 9:40 am The department estimates over $200,000 lost, but could not determine an exact amount in content damages as “firefighters could not assess the value of the contents in each storage unit.”

The cause of the fire is undetermined and under investigation.
