WEST BLOOMFIELD, Mich. – Classes were canceled at West Bloomfield High School on Monday after police said they received a threat.

Bomb threat over phone

Officials with the West Bloomfield Police Department said they received a call around 7 am Monday, May 20, 2024.

A person calling himself Alex told police over the phone that he had placed a bomb at the high school.

Police find no credible threat

Officers immediately went to West Bloomfield High School to investigate the bomb threat.

A preliminary investigation found no credible threat, according to police. They determined that nobody at the school was in danger.

Students sent home

Superintendent Dania Bazzi and Principal Eric Pace sent a message to parents and guardians about students being sent home from school because of the threat.

“Although we believe that this threat is not credible, the safety and well-being of our students, staff, and community members are our highest priority, so we have canceled West Bloomfield High School for today,” the statement said, in part.

High school students who were already at the school got dismissed. Anyone who surrounded the bus to school was searched home.

Students who drove themselves were asked to return home.

A decision about after-school activities has not yet been announced, but school officials said they will communicate it later in the day.

Threat linked to others across country

Detectives investigated the phone number used to call in the bomb threat and learned that it was linked to several similar threats across the country.

Those threats were made over the past two months, police said.

Officials are reaching out to other departments across the country to try to learn more about this trend.

School officials said they will provide an update whenever more information becomes available.
