Several Reed Custer Middle School school buses were involved in an accident in a Chicago suburb Tuesday morning, authorities said.

According to Illinois State Police, a multi-unit crash involving at least three school buses took place shortly after 8:30 a.m. on northbound Interstate 55 at mile marker 246 in Grundy County.

Authorities said minor injuries were reported at the scene, but no further information was available about the conditions or whether those injuries involved students.

However, Morris Hospital confirmed that two people were transported to its hospital, none in serious condition, while Silver Cross Hospital said four patients were transported to its emergency room.

Additional school buses were being called to the location “to assist in the relocation,” state police said, noting that the relocation location will be The Loves Truck Stop on the east side of I-55.

For its part, the Braidwood Police Department reported that all students who were on board the school buses involved in the crash were safely relocated to a local gas station while state police officers conduct their respective investigations.

Once officers complete the investigation, the students will be returned to Reed Custer Middle School to be reunited with their parents, Braidwood police added.

Meanwhile, the right lane of I-55 remained temporarily closed, state police said.
