“We need to work to have another Camisea”

María Julia Aybar, Country Manager of Hunt Oil Company, highlighted the importance of hydrocarbons in the energy transition process, especially natural gas to address the adaptation of the energy matrix with a view to mitigating global warming.

More or less 80% of energy generation in the world depends on fossil hydrocarbons and we do have to change that, but that is not going to happen overnight. So the hydrocarbon sector, whether oil or gas, still has an important role in energy matrices. But we have to do it in such a way that this participation is aligned with the emissions reduction objectives.“, he explained in an interview with Diálogos Mineros, a program of the Institute of Mining Engineers of Peru (IIMP).

In line with this, Aybar indicated that the energy transition process must be evaluated according to the reality of each country, which in the case of Peru indicated that there is a fairly clean matrix.

Likewise, he considered it very valuable that the country has natural gas, a key input to have low Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, which ensures greater sustainability, has affordable costs for the population and has no intermittency.

Natural gas, although it is a fossil hydrocarbon, continues to be what has been identified as the fuel of the transition because, as I said, natural gas gives us this security that today renewable technologies still cannot cover, I am referring to the intermittence. What happens when there is no water, when there is no sun or there is no wind? We still need energy and natural gas plays an essential role there.“, he claimed.

For Aybar, the use of natural gas should be improved and increased as part of the actions to enhance the energy transition in the country. In that sense, he emphasized the need to attract greater investments, both in mining and in various industries, that provide the resources that the country requires to explore and develop advances in energy technology.

This year we are celebrating 20 years of Camisea, so we need to work to have another Camisea that we will be celebrating another 20 years from now and for that private investment is important, this private investment is going to bring resources, it is going to move the economy and It is evidently going to generate growth in energy demand. And that is good because it is related to the economic growth of the country.”, he stressed.
